ELEVATING THE LANDSCAPE OF PERFORMING ARTS LIVE STREAMING

However, the onset of the pandemic brought forth unique challenges, necessitating innovative audio and visual solutions to navigate the evolving landscape. 

THE CHALLENGE

Live Streaming Obstacles in a COVID-19 World

Because of COVID-19, Rolton Productions had to contend with major changes to the setup of production for concerts. What used to be a single setup that would last from the start to end with an intermission in between, has now turned into multiple setups within an even shorter time frame now that intermissions are removed. On top of restrictions set in place for productions, and the reduction in number of people allowed on set, the workload was much heavier for everyone on-duty, with longer time required to set things up. 

Replicating Live Concerts in a Pandemic

Live concert experiences are unique on their own, and Rolton Productions needed to be able to replicate that experience, as closely as possible.

Transitioning from physical to hybrid concerts amidst the pandemic posed significant challenges for Rolton Productions. With restrictions limiting the number of personnel on set and compressing production timelines, the need for adaptable, high-quality camera solutions became paramount. 

THE SOLUTION

Redefining Live Streaming Quality with Innovative Technology

Rolton Productions turned to Canon's CR-N500 Remote PTZ Camera and Remote Controller RC-IP100 to elevate their live streaming capabilities. 

The colours on Canon cameras are true and more neutral, and that made it easier to match with the other brands of cameras that Rolton Productions had on-hand. It also enabled easy integration for post-production work. 

In addition, Canon's 4K UHD video quality and 15x optical zoom on the CR-N500 also allowed the team to focus on individual performers on stage as they zoomed in, while keeping full resolution. The slow zoom feature also benefited their live recording during classical music performances. And the implementation of audio XLR options let the crew record audio into the camera directly, with the option for expansion of more audio channels.

These solutions offered unparalleled quality and flexibility, enabling seamless transitions between multiple setups and enhancing post-production workflows. 

The Implementation Process

Since integrating Canon's camera solutions in August 2021, Rolton Productions has witnessed a transformative shift in their live streaming process. The auto-focusing capabilities and pan-tilt-zoom features of Canon's cameras have streamlined operations, allowing for quick transitions between performers and delivering high-speed, high-precision shots. 

The adoption of Canon's solutions has led to a significant enhancement in video quality and production efficiency for Rolton Productions. 

Live mixing over the Remote Controller RC-IP100 made seamless communication with one another possible as the crew switched between cameras. The ability to have all presets of remote PTZ cameras saved on the Remote Controller also gave the director better control, on top of the added advantage from the flexibility that the cameras onstage were able to give.

These implementations allowed the production crew to have a comprehensive overview of all the shows that they had, and all the shots that they might need, and to have good synchronisation of audio and video with high-quality audio, which is crucial in replicating the best concert hall experience.
